The Dutch men’s hockey team beat Germany in a penalty shoot-out to take the Olympic gold medal for the first time in 24 years.
Duco Telgenkamp put away the winner in the shoot-out after the match ended 1-1.
There was a moment of tension in the celebrations after the game and several Dutch and German players had to be kept apart by officials.
The Netherlands is hoping to make it a double as the Dutch women take on China in the women’s final on Friday at 8 pm.
There was disappointment, however, for Femke Bol, who could only manage third place in the 400 metres hurdles.
The title went to favourite Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone who set a new world record of 50.37, with fellow American Anna Cockrell taking the silver.
The race between Bol and McLaughlin-Levrone had been hotly anticipated following Bol’s sprint finish in the 4×400 mixed relay, in which she overtook three runners to win gold.
A distraught Bol told broadcaster NOS after the race she did not understand what had happened. “I’m in great form and I feel strong but after 250 metres I just could not do it any more,” she said. “I came here for my best race and I ran one of my worst.”
Earlier in the day, swimmer Sharon van Rouwendaal won the gold medal in the 10 kilometre open water race through the Seine river.
Van Rouwendaal won silver over the distance in Tokyo and gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. She is the first person ever to win two golds in Olympic open water swimming.
The Netherlands are now eighth in the medals table with 11 gold medals, six silver and 8 bronze.
