Netherlands, Slovenia and Ukraine win first Olympic quota places for Paris 2024

Ukrainian Mykhailo will be particularly delighted having never competed in an Olympic Games.

The world number 400 pulled off a huge upset in the quarterfinals beating Italy’s Nespoli despite being 4-2 down after the third set.

“I’m very proud today about the quota going to Ukraine,” said Mykhailo after qualifying.

“The goal for me of course was getting the quota, but the focus was for my technique and to shoot one by one in good quality.”

“It’s like my small secret was that focus for technique.”

Mykhailo’s second defeat of the day came to the hands of Ravnikar in the bronze final who won 9-8 in a shootout.

Paris will be the 24-year-old’s second Olympic Games after he competed in Tokyo 2020 exiting in the first round.

Ravnikar feels much more confident now with three years of added experience under his belt.

“It means a lot,” he said. “I’ve already been to the Tokyo Olympics, and I know I’m a lot better than then.”

“I just had to come out with good shots and make it. It was a hard match between me and Den, but it’s me who won in the end.”

Six further quota places to Paris will be up for grabs later this week in the Essen, to the recurve women’s and men’s team winners of the European Archery Championships. This could cause some individual quotas – won here, the Europeans or the last world championships – to be reassigned.
