Rutger Smith releases Discus 65.51m – Dutch Championships | NEWS | World Athletics

Amsterdam, The NetherlandsA week after his national Shot Put record of 21.41 metres, the fourth best in the world this season, Rutger Smith was again impressive during the national championships in the Olympic stadium of Amsterdam, yesterday Sunday 10 July.

A day, after his 24 th birthday, Smith took the honours  with the Shot and the Discus. “At Stadskanaal I proved last week what I can do with the Shot. “My aim today was to win the shot and better my personal best with the Discus,” confirmed Smith.

After winning the Shot Put with 20.59 metres with his first throw, the giant from Leek in the north of The Netherlands performed excellently with the Discus. He opened with 60.21 m, followed with 61.57, after which in the third round he threw his a personal best of 65.51 metres. After two fouls he finished with 63.11 metres.

“I’m feeling fine. Two personal best in a week is great”, the European indoor silver medallist said afterwards. “I’m looking forward to the World championships in Helsinki. Two weeks from now I have a competition at Helsinki. I have never been there so I can taste the atmosphere there.”

On a sunny weekend with much wind on Sunday the national Championships of Holland were not generally of a very high level but we should pay attention to the 20.41 run of Guus Hoogmoed in the 200m which was of course note, and was one part of a sprint double for the 23-year-old.
