Memphis Depay is wearing a headband for the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 opener against Poland.
The 30-year-old wore the eye-catching white headband for Netherlands‘ opener encounter of the European Championships, as he had done for friendlies against Canada and Iceland earlier this month.
The ex-Barcelona star’s attire has became a talking point on social media with the forward having even faced some criticism for certain sections of Dutch media.
But Depay explained last week that he had opted for the headband because it helped him sweat while his girlfriend was also a fan of the accessory.
“The previous match I made 20 minutes of time for the press in the mixed zone and I haven’t had any questions about it,” Depay explained after the Iceland match. “Who cares? It looks great on me and helps me sweat.
“My girlfriend likes that sweatband. Amazing, right?
“It’s a new look and I feel good about it. I’m already thinking about what colour I’m going to wear in Germany.”
The European Championships are set to be a big tournament for Depay, with the player just five goals short of equaling Robin van Persie’s goalscoring record for the Netherlands.

Moreover, the attacker has become a free agent after two season at Atletico Madrid, with a good performance in Germany likely to determine his next club.
Depay was part of the Netherlands Under-17 side to have won the European Championships in 2011 with a 5-2 win over Germany in the final.
Beyond the Netherlands and Poland, Group D also contains France and Austria.
